Bill Shew
CEO
Bill has over 35 years’ experience in strategy, management, finance and business advisory.
As CEO of McCafferty Legal, Bill is responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of the firm, including the implementation of the firm’s business strategy and its focus on delivering value for money services to its clients.

SENIOR PRACTICE MANAGER
Claudia has a background in education and policy and she is the firm’s senior practice manager responsible for the management of the practice and supporting the legal team.

Michael McCafferty
Principal – Partner
Michael has 35 years of experience in the law and eight years of legal management experience having been a partner of King Wood Mallesons for 17 years.
Since 1996 Michael’s practice has focused mainly on the energy sector and he works for clients on projects in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania in the areas of – industry restructures and reforms, transmission network infrastructure projects, connection projects, balance of plant wind farm contracting, renewable energy zone projects, energy regulation and compliance, joint ventures, mergers and acquisition, governance, board advisory and general contract and commercial work.
Michael is also an experienced director of companies in the energy sector.

Michael Chan
Partner
Michael has more than 15 years’ legal experience, working across private practice and in-house in the banking and energy industries. Michael was most recently at TasNetworks, initially as a lawyer then leader of the legal team before being promoted to Executive Governance, with responsibility for legal, company secretariat and wider governance functions including risk, audit and compliance.
Michael has transactional experience across both transmission/distribution generation and load connections, construction of transmission/distribution infrastructure, REZ regulatory design and implementation as well as general M&A and joint ventures. Michael is also experienced in energy regulation and policy and corporate governance.
Michael is also an experienced not-for-profit company director.

Phillippa Bartlett
Partner
Phillippa has more than 20 years of experience in the law, predominantly working as in-house counsel in the energy industry – working across electricity generation, retail and network businesses. Phillippa also has a strong background in corporate governance. She was most recently Company Secretary and General Counsel at TasNetworks, a position she held for nearly eight years. Before joining TasNetworks, Phillippa worked at Hydro Tasmania for nine years, initially as a Corporate Solicitor and then as Deputy General Counsel.
Phillippa also has a range of transactional experience from her time at Hydro Tasmania, including work on establishing renewables energy company Roaring Forties Pty Ltd, the sell-down and subsequent disaggregation of Roaring 40s; Basslink commissioning, sale of Basslink; and Basslink commercial disputes and arbitration. She has worked on negotiating long-term electricity derivative transactions, and commercial arrangements for wind farms in Tasmania and South Australia.

Rhys Pinkerton
SPECIAL COUNSEL
Rhys has more than 18 years of experience in the law, working across private practice and in-house counsel and, prior to practising law, he spent 10 years in the banking and finance industry. Rhys was most recently at Page Seager Lawyers as a Special Counsel for 3 years where his practice was focussed mainly on the energy sector. Before joining Page Seager, Rhys worked at Hydro Tasmania for 12 years, during which time he was Head of Legal Services for a number of years.
Rhys has a broad range of transactional experience, including advising Hydro Tasmania on: the demolition and sale of one of its Tasmanian power station sites; its pricing and access dispute with Tasmanian Gas Pipeline Pty Ltd, which gave rise to the first arbitration to be heard under Part 23 of the National Gas Rules; and its development of a project financed 10 MW run-of-river hydropower plant in the Northern Cape, on the Orange River downstream of the existing Neusberg Weir. Rhys also has experience in drafting and negotiating power purchase agreements, behind-the-meter offtake agreements, load interruptibility services agreements and large-scale generation certificate (LGC) sale and purchase agreements for wind farm operators.

Tony Holland
Senior Legal Consultant
Tony has more than 40 years experience in the law and long been regarded as one of the leading project finance lawyers in Australia and overseas. He has extensive experience advising across the spectrum of project and infrastructure finance, including energy (and particularly renewable energy), resources, oil and gas, PPPs, both in Australia and internationally, as well as privatisations and acquisition and leveraged finance. Tony has lived and worked in both London and the Middle East.
Tony has been a partner of Mallesons Stephen Jaques, now King &Wood Mallesons, (where he was the head of the banking and finance group and deputy chairman of the firm), Managing Partner of DLA Piper Dubai and Australia, a partner of Gilbert & Tobin and a partner of PWC Legal.
He has advised financiers and sponsors across a wide spectrum of finance, project, infrastructure and mining and natural resources work.
Tony has been extensively involved in the electricity industry in Australia for many years, from the first power station privatisations, through to the restructuring and privatisation of the industry and the growth, development and financing of renewable energy in Australia.
Most of all, Tony enjoys being involved in new and innovative projects, projects that have never been done before, and developing a strategy, structure and risk allocation that will provide a robust base for funding with debt and equity.
Tony has also lectured for a number of years in infrastructure development and in project finance and for the last five years or so, focused on financing of renewables, for the Master of Laws program at the University of Melbourne, Australia.
Tony also co-authored a chapter on project finance in the textbook Australian Finance Law.
Tony brings to McCafferty Legal a wealth and depth of legal and management experience to assist the firm and its clients with delivering successful renewable energy projects in Australia.

Richard Hart
Senior Legal Consultant
Richard’s experience includes – joint venture arrangements; major property, renewable energy and infrastructure construction projects; property acquisitions and sales; landowner access arrangements; and associated project property, planning, environmental, authorisations/permits and due diligence and compliance reports.

Alex Dimakopoulos
Associate
Alex is an Associate with the firm. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Batchelor of Laws with honours. Alex has worked in the areas of negotiated M&A transactions, due diligence, native title and corporate and commercial advisory matters.
Alex has a keen interest in the energy sector, particularly renewable energy projects and net zero transition.

Francesca Nyilas
Lawyer
Francesca is a Lawyer with McCafferty Legal. She holds a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of International Studies. She has worked in the areas of climate change policy, planning and environmental law, property law, animal law and renewable energy.
Francesca has experience in transmission works agreements, connection and access agreements for renewable energy facilities and advice on the National Electricity Rules.

Nathan Watson
SENIOR GRADUATE
Nathan is a senior graduate with McCafferty Legal. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce and is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Laws in Sydney. Nathan has a keen interest in the energy sector.
Nathan assists the team with transmission works agreements, connection and access agreements for renewable energy facilities and advice on the National Electricity Rules.

Roger Nasser
Senior Commercial Adviser (non-legal)
Roger has 37 years of experience in Australia and overseas as a corporate lawyer in the resources sector and he has held the positions of Chief Legal Counsel and Legal Counsel of ASX listed resource companies.
Roger has been responsible for the legal function of multinational business operations as well as working closely with directors and senior management executives.
His experience includes – major M&A transactions; joint venture arrangements; development of resource reserves (and associated property, planning, environmental and authorisations/permits); major infrastructure construction; environmental audit and compliance and climate change, net zero emissions and decarbonisation strategies.

Mark Jackson
Head of Project Initiation, Delivery and Technical (non-legal)
Mark has worked for over twenty years as a highly regarded and sought after professional Manager and Engineer in the renewable and electricity transmission industries. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (electrical), a Master in Construction Law, a Master in Engineering Science (Aerospace) and a Diploma in Project Management.
Mark has extensive experience in establishing major programs of works for clients, including Hydro Tasmania (West Coast Refurbishment Strategy), and most recently Tasmanian Networks (Tasmanian Renewable Energy Zones, Bell Bay Hydrogen Strategy, and Strategic Project Delivery). Mark is able to effectively and efficiently develop and cultivate multi-disciplinary and geographically diverse teams using his broad engineering and management experiences, allowing for the delivery to clients of outcomes and benefits that meet and exceed all expectations.
